The launcher for the Atlas D was dubbed the “coffin launcher”, the 85ft tall missile was stored un-fueled in the horizontal position above ground prior to launch in these huge “soft” houses. This method of storage was opposite the Atlas D’s contemporary system, the Titan 1 which was stored vertically below ground in hardened concrete bunkers.
